Ek: an English Musical on the Life of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba is an original, unique production about the life and times of Shirdi Sai Baba, who is considered a saint to Muslims and a god to Hindus. Ek tells the story of a mysterious man who made his home in the town of Shirdi in 1858. Strange and withdrawn, Baba dressed simply, lived for years only under the shade of a neem tree, and preached acceptance of all, regardless of religion or caste. A musical combining flavors of Broadway and Bollywood, Ek captures the tense Muslim-Hindu dynamics of the 19th century and depicts why Shirdi Sai Baba remains a religious icon for millions even decades after transforming the lives of those in one small village.
Considered to be the first English language production on Shirdi Sai Baba, Ek features all original music in a blend of Broadway and Bollywood. With over 50 actors, dancers, and crew members, Ek is a spectacle meant for the whole family!
Ek had its premiere performance in Austin on February 18, 2012 to a sold-out crowd, and was originally staged by and starred Devaguptapu Babu. The vision, script, and lyrics were written by poet Usha Akella in only 35 days, and Ek, her third book, was recently released by Sterling Publishers, New Delhi. The score and songs were composed by artist and critic Suchitra Lata in Bangalore, India, and choreographed by Vinitha Subramanian, director of the Natyalaya School of Dance. Ek was presented by the Natyalaya School of Dance and produced by the Sri Shirdi Sai Temple of Austin, a charitable 501(c)3 that is open to people of all faiths and provides 40,000 meals yearly to the homeless in Austin. All proceeds from the premiere show went to the Sri Shirdi Sai Temple.
Ek will be performed in Houston on May 6, 2012.
